I think my attitude is mostly a matter of luck and grace, but I have also consciously cultivated it. I’ve also become more and more convinced that looking for, and enjoying, other people’s courage and triumphs, large and small, is a critical aspect of satisfying social connection. It’s what we all need to be doing. So, I’m always glad when I can manage it, and miss it when I can’t.

It’s a very good point about happiness not being zero sum. It’s kind of the opposite actually. It’s hard to be happy when we’re alone with it.
